How CAT program is working?
Cat acronym stands for "computer-assisted translation". In practice, simplifying, this means that the translated documents create a private database: a translation memory. CAT program analyzes each new document to see if a similar text has already been translated. You can create a separate translation memory for each client or tasks on the same subject what allows the translator to maintain a consistent style and vocabulary in the following texts. This is very important in the case of large projects on which a team of translators is working.
Pros of "cats" in practise
Every day a translator works with texts intended for different target groups - HR directors of large organizations, manual workers, web applications users. Each of the group has different expectations and needs. The translator has to fulfil these needs, and the use of the program that assist translation is remarkably easier.
In translation projects often we account for customers on the basis of the number of translated words of pages. The number of words is easy to check when the file to be translated is in Word. More problematic are Excel spreadsheets and presentations. Translation programs have built-in
option to prepare statistics. This means that you can quickly prepare the offer, knowing the number of pages to be translated.
Which program to use and why is it memoQ?
There are many translation programs such as Wordfast, OmegaT, memoQ or Trados. The choice is simple: the best to use is memQ. This CAT works with files in many formats, including .indd, .xml or .html. MemoQ is very user-friendly program – it runs with pleasure.
